A little brag and your thoughts, please?

First I wanted to show off the fact that my lovely husband got me roses for our anniversary yesterday. I love getting flowers, and they make me happy every time I look at them.

Sigh :)
After I put them in water, I stuck them on our new hall table and liked how it looked so much that I thought I'd show you too. Let it be known that I'm no interior design blogger, and for good reason! However, I do enjoy putting our house together and getting things just the way I want them, and am usually very pleased with the result.

Why, yes, our shoes always look like that!
I really like the little console table (Pier 1, if you were wondering) and am really happy with how it fits in the space. I looked for one for completely ages, but couldn't find the right thing, and was hesitant to buy anything until we put the tile in. The carpet that you see on the left used to go about 2/3 of the way across the wall, so any table would have had two legs on carpet and two legs on tile and just looked weird. Then, once the tile was in, Nick looked around online (after I had warned him how hard it was to find anything that would work and how I had been looking for four years), and in less than 20 minutes he came up with this. After that I introduced him to West Elm, and within minutes we had picked out the bowl that we use to catch keys, sunglasses and the general contents of my husband's pockets. So all of that was simple and straightforward enough, and looked great the moment we brought it in the house.

Here's what is really stumping me: what do we do with the wall above the table? I feel like the framed photo we currently have up there gets a little lost in the space. I think we either need to go with one bigger piece, or lots of smaller ones. A big mirror would make a lot of sense, but we already have a huge mirror over the couch on the opposite wall, and my narcissism only goes so far.

Right now I like the idea of doing a little collection of eclectic stuff in frames, like family photos, framed postcards and posters of significant places for our family, maybe a photo of where we were married, that sort of thing. But I'm a bit worried that we will end up with a hot mess on our wall instead. We tend to be drawn to clean lines and symmetry, and I'm not sure if we could actually pull off the kind of hodgepodge I'm envisioning.

I'm also thinking that one of these maps could be awesome. I like the idea of marking the places where our family is from. I wish it was portrait-oriented instead of landscape to fit the space better, but I can't exactly ask that world maps be drawn differently to suit me. They do country maps too, but haven't added Norway to the list yet. Otherwise it might be cool to hang the US, UK and Norway together. Pretty please?

So, now that you've seen the space and read my stream-of-consciousness thoughts on it, what do you think? Feel free to throw out some idea on what to use the itty bitty shelf under the table for too. Go hive brain, go!

  1. Is the couch mirror too large for this space? Just sayin' That would leave you with a new space to play with above your couch. :)

    1. Good idea, but yes, the couch mirror is GIGANTOR. I think it's over 6 ft long!

  2. I like the idea of lots of smaller frames. But maybe not a hodge podge of stuff in them. Either all photographs, or all the same style/kind of post card or something like that. Your tile is beautiful, btw! And, as always, I miss your face!

  3. Love the table, love the roses. Think you are right about th picture. It looks a bit to small for that wallspace. Think all your ideas are good ones. Best of luck whichever you choose to go for. Just remember to think Feng Shui then you cant go wrong:)

  4. I would still vote big mirror, because I think its useful to be able to check you don't have toothpaste all over your face before you leave the house, that happens to me on a daily basis, if not, I think little frame collage would be nice... good luck! :)xo

  6. The picture is too small. While I like the eclectic look, I don't know if I would personally put it right by the door. To me, that's not the type of busy-ness I want to be greeted by when entering the home. I think it would look better in a more personal space. Someone else already commented about doing a few things but all the same type, like all photographs.

Is the wall not big enough for the world map as it is? I'm sure you could find something on pinterest that would suit your needs (and then you could blog about it :)
