Project Service Project: CSN Stores Giveaway!

I was going to post this tomorrow, but seeing as we're going out of town again this weekend, I'm giving y'all a head start on my giveaway.

CSN Stores is giving one of you lucky, lucky readers a $40 gift certificate to use at any one of their 200 online stores. From bedroom furniture sets to some seriously cute toys, to just about anything you could think of, CSN Stores has all kinds of stuff to offer. If you're like me, your biggest problem will be some serious overwhelm from all the selection!

I will be selecting a winner in conjunction with the Unites States' National Day of Service on September 11th. I know you're out there doing good stuff for people, and I want to reward you for that! So, in order to enter, I want to hear about your experiences with service.

But first, some rules!

  • For a shot at winning the gift certificate, please leave a comment to this post telling about an experience that you had with service, either as the giver or as the recipient.
  • For a second entry, go out and do something for someone else, then come back and leave another comment on this post, telling us all about it. Of course I'm not going to be able to check up on you, so on your honour, soldier!
  • The competition is only open to residents of the US and Canada - sorry, everyone else! I'll make it up to you.
  • I'll be taking entries until noon MST on September 11th, and the winner will be selected at random and announced that night.
  • If I can't simply click through to your blog, please leave your name and email so I can reach you. So no prizes for the anonymous!
  • That's it!

  1. I organize my bus pass program, which allows people in my neighborhood to ride the bus at a reduced rate. It takes a lot of work, but it's a great way to encourage the use of public transportation.

  2. We are the primary caretakers for my grandparents -- this morning I took them to the market, and last night I made them dinner.

  3. We help put together sandwiches for a local organization one night each month who hands them out to the homeless in our city. A bunch of us get together at a friend's house and slap together about 250 or so sandwiches, assembly line style, then bag them each with chips and a dessert. It's a great experience!

  4. When I was expecting my second baby, my church women's group had a service auction where we all offered a service and received one. I offered free piano lessons. The woman who go my service was very sweet. One week, after our lesson, she noticed my sink piled up with dirty dishes. I explained that doing the dishes made me very ill because of the pregnancy and my husband was in full-time school and had a full-time job, so it hadn't been done in a couple days. So, she got up and did all my dishes and cleaned my kitchen. It was the most touching and truly loving act of service I have ever received.

  5. One time, when I was suddenly homeless, some newly married friends of mine let me stay at their house for THREE MONTHS! ;) I have been eternally grateful for their kindness and generosity. I recently attempted to pay it forward in a small small way, by having a friend of ours come live with us for a few weeks. Her husband had to be out of the country for several months, and she was horribly sick with morning sickness and didn't want to be alone in her home. Hopefully I'll be able to pay it forward (or back!) some more!

  6. On the first Monday that McKay had to go back to work after Isaac's birth, a friend of mine in Washington called up a restaurant here in the Bay Area and ordered and paid for my lunch and then had it delivered to my door. Best lunch ever! It was so nice to not have to cook or do dishes that day.

Now I need to pay it forward, don't I?

  7. We had a water main leak in our front yard. Rather than pay the bill until the problem was fixed, we chose to turn the water off. We were lucky enough to have some water storage for brushing teeth, some bathroom opportunities, and slight dish washing, it still took it's toll. We showered at my parents' (one service from them) and often ate there too. I had another friend that made us "bathroom passes" and gave us bottled water. What a sweet gesture in our time of drought!

  8. I recently gave service to my fellow teachers. Getting out of school at a resonable time on Friday is a big deal to any teacher, just as it is to any employee anywhere who just wants to be done with work for the week. Last Friday there was some grade level copying to be done. I volunteered to do it. (Granted I needed some of the pages done too, but...) I was proud of myself because I didn't hesitate and wait to see if someone else would do it. I had to stay later because of it. Small acts go a long way, right?

  9. I volunteer with a kid's afterschool program (play games, help with hw, etc) and it has been such a great experience. Sometimes it's hard rushing all over the place but it's well worth it! :)

  11. After my miscarriage, I had numerous people bring me flowers and food. And phone calls and cards were never far. That time in my life was actually a very bright one, because I felt so loved, cared for, and befriended, even by people I barely knew. To these people I am forever grateful!

  12. I baby-sat for my neighbor so she could attend a funeral. I'm not sure if this counts as service though, because the baby was so cute that I thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

  13. I was out at a cafe having a fight with my BF that was rather heated. I had someone who was seated nearby stop to let us know she had heard some of our conversation and was praying for us. I just thought it was nice, but not at all intrusive.

  14. I knit a scarf to enter into our County fair. It was a feather and fan type pattern that took I while. I really liked it and won an honorable mention. I couldn't wait to don it this winter. However, I donated it to the "scarves for the homeless" project at my church.

  15. I used to volunteer at the local humane society until it got to be too painful for me
